June 2005

Hello Everyone! Please spread the word.....we've been blessed by Ronnie & Gene Malcomist, and they will be taking over spearheading the "Songwriter's Showcases" at Fat Jack's on Sunday nights until Murphy's able to be back. So, starting this Sunday, April 10th from 8 pm to 10 pm, Ronnie & Gene will be playing two sets, and we'll still occasionally have some other guest musicians coming in to play their original material, as well.

For those that weren't in attendance this past Sunday, we all had a great time--it's such a blessing to have a venue that wants original material, and features local musicians! (And, Fat Jack's is working on getting a cook on Sunday nights so the kitchen will be open for food--yum!) Again, Fat Jack's is located at 202 Louisiana Avenue (formerly TKs), and their phone number 419-874-2071.

If you have ANY questions, call Fat Jack's, or call me at 419-874-9378!
Hope to see you all there! blessings, Diane

BLUEGRASS CLUB FOR KIDS IN FINDLAY, OHIO

Findlay City Schools - High School - has a new bluegrass club. Joe Steiner will be going once a month to teach them how to play guitar, mandolin, bass and banjo, and they have 4 teachers that will keep the kids practicing between times. When we did this previously with St. Wendelin's High School group, all the kids were learning to play banjo, so it wasn't hard to have group lessons. At Findlay, however, several of the students want to learn mandolin, and many want to learn banjo. With only one practice session a month, it's hard for Joe to teach both instruments at the same time.

Is there anyone from the Findlay area that could donate a couple hours one night a month (usually a Wednesday night) to help instruct these students? We could really use a mandolin or banjo player!! Actually, the more then merrier!

We have about 15 students and 4 teachers that will be in the club. Joe and I donate all of our time, plus we are donating 8 banjos and 2 mandolins to the club for their use as long as the club remains. Once they are returned, they get loaned to the next club that forms.

Our first meeting is April 6. We'll hand out banjos and mandolins then, and get them started on something easy. Some already have guitars and fiddles and the school has a bass. If anyone would like to help, please have them contact me. It's a LOT of fun and we are hoping to get the kids up and going quickly so that they can attend some festivals soon. They have been invited to play at Kendallville in the fall, and a couple years ago the St. Wendelin group was invited to open for the Lewis Family at their concert in Indiana!

I can be reached via email at Cooperrider@yahoo.com, or during the day at 419-424-7499 (work).
Thanks! I sure appreciate it!!!!! Chris Cooperrider

On November 15, 2004 Rock A Mole Productions (www.rockamole.com)
of Los Angeles released Everybody In, Nobody Out, a new film on musicians and health care.

It's just seven minutes long but it packs quite a wallop.
It will be sent free on VHS to any musician or music writer who requests it.

For more information, contact us at rockrap@aol.com or RRC, Box 341305, LA, CA 90034.

"What does it say about the richest country on earth that its citizens must depend upon raffles and spaghetti dinners to pay the medical bills--a situation that exists in no other civilized country? What does it say about members of Congress and presidents, Democrats and Republicans all, who are content with a health care system that ignores the needs of tens of millions of Americans while it makes multimillionaires out of those who profit from disease and death?"

Help Find A Home for Bill Monroe's Historic 1956 flx Tour Bus,
known as "The Bluegrass Breakdown"

New rebuilt 238 Detroit Diesel, new Transmission, all new air conditioning, repainted back to Bill's two-toned blue! Makes a cozy home for the musician, I know, my whole family and I lived on the old bus for 10 months, in Nashville. TN. We have been touring in the old bus for 6 years, and we really wanted to keep the old bus. Every musician I have met that worked with Bill Monroe, has had a interesting story either about driving the old bus, or their experience's while touring with The Father of Bluegrass! My family couldn't believe it, we bought the bus without knowing that it used to be Bill Monroe's. My family is originally from the holler's of Ky, and the hills of old Va. What a honor we have had. We have always let fans on it by the hundred's.

After 6 years, we have some interesting stories about our adventure's, yes we know why they call it the Bluegrass Breakdown, but everywhere we broke down, someone always showed up and helped us. Once we were broke down in Pa., and we didn't have enough money, and the owner of the garage let us go on thru, after he heard us outside pickin for tips, he said you guys are the real thing! We recently worked a show with Vassar Clements, and he just loved the old bus, and made himself right at home on it, I couldn't write down his stories about the old bus fast enough.

I myself grew up in a family bluegrass band, my parents moved to Ohio to try and escape poverty. I now have my own family band, which we recently had to move my from Nashville, back to Ohio due to the loss of my brother and father and now my mother is on life support. We need a new tour bus, so we can stay out on the road more. Bill's old bus is kind of scary in the snow and ice. There are enough stories about this old bus, and the impact it has had on Bluegrass Music, to write a book.

This in from Alice Freed and her Ohio Bluegrass Community Newsletter

She wrote to tell us that Paul Friend, known as Little Red and a member of
the White Oak Bluegrass Band is going through a rough time.

On November 17, he lost his son Dwayne Allen Friend to a heart attack at the
young age of only 40. Only 11 months before he had lost his other son at
Christmas time to a heart attack as well. And several years previous he had
lost his 7 year old son to a freak accident. No father should have to
endure so much. There is a benefit in the works and a bake sale and raffle
to help with funeral expenses. The benefit is planned for April and any
bands who would like to help, please contact Alice. Also, if you would like
to help with the sale, contact her as well.

In the meanwhile, please offer your prayers to this family in their time of
need. This is such a hard time for many in need.

Contact Alice Faye Freed at 800-499-3151 or 330-699-4315 for info.

A Nashville tribute to the Moody Blues by 31 of Nashville's most accomplished and successful
musicians including talents such as:

FEATURING GUEST APPEARANCES BY ALISON KRAUSS, TIM O'BRIEN, ALISON BROWN, SAM BUSH, STUART DUNCAN, JOHN COWAN, AND MANY OTHERS
Cambridge, MA - On September 28, Rounder Records puts a bluegrass spin on songs by The Moody Blues with the release of Moody Bluegrass: A Nashville Tribute to the Moody Blues. Here are some of the best-loved songs of the classic rock era transformed into fully realized bluegrass. The music transcends what might have started only as a clever concept it's a fresh sound that's sure to be embraced by bluegrass and Moody Blues fans alike. Above all, it's great fun.

Recorded and produced in Nashville, the collection features guest appearances by many acclaimed musicians including Alison Krauss, Tim O'Brien, Larry Cordle, Aubrey Haynie, Alison Brown, Sam Bush and Stuart Duncan on a range of Moody Blues tunes such as "Lovely To See You" and "Your Wildest Dreams."

Said producer/mandolinist David Harvey, "What stands out to me is the performances of the singers on this album. They're not just good singers coming in and doing versions of songs. What you hear are singers making songs their own."

Get well Marc!!

Thanks to all for your kind thoughts and prayers. As many of you know, we actually had to suspend both local and syndicated broadcasts due to Marc's sudden bout with seizures. He had a seizure disorder as a child, but hasn't had any in over 13 years...until September. He is spending the night tonight at a local hospital to run even more tests. He is doing much better now, and he hopes that he will be 'back in the saddle' again soon. I do to. Thanks again for your thoughts and prayers. I will try to keep everyone posted. Best Free Music Break:
Old Time Music Co.
Saturday afternoon Bluegrass jams attract local music veterans and newcomers for some impromptu performances guaranteed to bring a smile to your face. The concerts take place in a side room adjacent to shelves of mandolins, sheet music and assorted used instruments.
The space resembles a weather-beaten cafe with its worn tables and chairs, but the Bluegrass music is first rate and always free. Shop owner and veteran musician Vernon McIntyre and his wife Kitty live in the apartment above the store, which makes the spot something of a Bluegrass mecca. Old Time Music Co., 6019 Vine St., Elmwood Place, 513-242-1442.
