Well, when I got the invitation
to come to the Ashland Conservation Club's monthly jam and show in
the spring, I knew that I needed to get down there and visit. So,
armed with some good music, (Still listening to JD, but also got that
Del McCoury CD with the "It's Just the Night" cut on it...
) I hit the Orange Barrel Trail down to Ashland Ohio.
I took the backroads through
the country, which did add a little more time on the trip from Toledo
that I had wanted, but the scenary was worth the visit. And then when
I arrived at the club, what a gem to behold! Driving through woods,
and then coming out into the lake and barn, it was just so pretty
in the evening light. Beautifully cared for, the grounds were very
nice and tidy. The club does a great job of keeping this old farm
and acreage up.
The boys that put on the show,
Toby and Ernie McClure sure roll out the red carpet with good friendly
staff and people helping out with concessions and all. It was warm
and welcoming even though at first no one really knew who I was. That
was nice to see, these people here are genuine and just a great time
was had by all. We all had a good time singing Happy Birthday to Toby
and the place didn't even burn down from the heat from the cake's
candles!
Several groups played, like the
Honey Creek Grass Band and a few others that evening. Copus Hill played
a great set, and I really enjoyed their work. Andy and Kevin Crabtree
are great musicians and fun to watch on stage. It's quite apparent
that they enjoy every minute of what they're doing. Mike Ball on the
banjo, he can pick with the best of them on the 5-string and his son
was laying down the bass like a seasoned bluegrasser. Rick Krassow
on the guitar and vocals really brought life to the songs.

Band
After a set, it was time to hit
the jam session out back of the barn. The spring evening was just
right, cool and brisk and the stars were out. It was thr first outdoor
jam session I've been to in over 20 years and I must say, it won't
be another 20 years until I do so again, I had so much fun. What a
delight to pick with some of the best musicians in Ohio. I was honored
they'd let me join in the fun. I hope I didn't flub up too bad, must
not have been too awful because they let me play both the Stelling
banjo and the new bass that I only had a few weeks of learning on!
It was getting a little too chilly
outside and the last set of the evening was here. Mike didn't ask
me, he TOLD me I was playing with them all! I had to tell him, this
was my first time playing with a microphone and he was pleased. I
can honestly say now, that he's taught me all I know about playing
the banjo with a band and amplification! I hope I'll keep learning,
but all in all, it was a magical night and I enjoyed it completely.
I hope that the club will be
offering these jam shows next Spring, or even in the Fall, because
in my book, they are a success! Be sure to take a look and check the
schedule. You can't meet a nicer group of people or spend a more pleasant
evening! And bring your instruments, because the jamming is great
fun!
I drove back on the turnpike
and that was a bit quicker trip, and all the time I was listening
to the music in my head and doing a whole lot of smiling. Thanks for
a great trip and visit, y'all!
